Ian and Phil
What started as a blank canvas with a lot of hard surfaces to remove and reuse, became a modern seaside garden. The feel of this comes from a celebration of old wooden railway sleepers, pebbles, curved decking, rope and bits of rusted iron, planting, a painted shed and bench, a ship's lantern and anchors from the local boat yard.

We created raised beds at different heights using antique (60-90 year old) reclaimed railway sleepers. We placed some of the sleepers on end to create a 'dock' or 'groyne' like feel.

Planting is modern and bold in places. The strong use of a central focal point was exciting-  a beautiful large pot (from Athelas Plant Nursery) planted up with a stunning large agave americana (thanks to Steve at Boreham Mill Nurseries) is very striking.

At night, thanks to Dave the electrician, the show goes on. The antique lantern hangs on an old bracket and casts a warm yellowish glow on the main patio area. Uplighters give silhouettes and lush green foliage, a blue light rope underneath the decking comes through the spaces, and an LED garland in the back left magnolia tree gives a very good moonlight effect over the intimate space of the small rear patio.

The planting is tending toward the exotic with mainly a celebration of grasses and perennials with a few backbone plants including a tree fern, black phormium, acers, and bamboo.

Thanks again for our stunning garden!  The neighbours have been falling over themselves to get a look in.
